asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the average cost of property for first-time buyers in London and in Birmingham; and whether he intends taking further action to help first-time buyers.

The average price of dwellings in Greater London purchased by first-time buyers with a building society mortgage was £21,735 in the third quarter of 1979. Separate infornmation is not available for Birmingham, but the corresponding figure for the West Midlands region was £13,722.
