asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on what date Her Majesty's Government ratified or accepted the European convention for the protection of animals kept for farming purposes.

The United Kingdom ratified this convention on 8 January 1979.

Mr. Richard Wainwright

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he is taking to make the inspection of hen batteries comply with article 7 of the European convention for the protection of animals kept for farming.

Mr. Wiggin

The requirements of article 7 are already provided for in the Welfare of Livestock (Intensive Units) Regulations 1978.
