HC Deb 06 November 1979 vol 973 cc95-6W
Mr. Ashley

asked the Prime Minister if she will set up an interdepartmental committee to consider the provision and sale of powdered baby milk by British firms to developing countries.

The Prime Minister

No. The Government were represented at the meeting on infant and young child feeding which was organised by WHO and UNICEF at Geneva from 9 to 12 October. WHO and UNICEF have been asked to organise the preparation of an international code of marketing of infant formula and other products with the involvement of all concerned parties. A similar initiative is under consideration in the FAO/WHO codex commission which meets in December in Rome. These meetings provide the best opportunity for fruitful discussions with the Governments of developing countries and the manufacturers, and have the full support of the Government.
