§ Mr. Fryasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the product of a 1p rate in the English counties; what is the latest estimate of the amount of aid his Department will provide to local authorities for snow clearance and extra road maintenance because of the exceptional winter conditions; and what is the amount that local authorities will have to provide out of their own resources to cover the costs due to the severe winter.
§ Mr. Denis HowellI have yet to receive from local authorities any estimates of their expenditure in dealing with exceptional winter conditions and cannot therefore estimate the share to be met by Exchequer assistance. The products of a 1p rate for all local authorities in England are set out in the current edition of the Municipal Year Book.
