HL Deb 27 March 1979 vol 399 c1572WA
Lord HOUGHTON of SOWERBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What steps they propose to take to cut the increase in the consumption of alcohol.

Lord WELLS-PESTELL

The Health Departments are preparing a consultative document which will examine the problem of misuse of alcohol, including the possibility of a link between overall consumption of alcohol and the level of alcohol-related harm, and will discuss various possible measures including those recommended by the Expenditure Committee of the House of Commons and the Advisory Committee on Alcoholism. It is hoped that the ensuing public debate will assist the Government to develop their policy for preventing excessive and inappropriate drinking. Meanwhile, the Health Education Council has run campaigns against the misuse of alcohol in the North East and is considering further such exercises.
