asked Her Majesty's Government:

The percentage increase in industrial wages in the Republic of South Africa respectively for Africans and whites during the past three years and the percentage increase of industrial wages in Russia over the same period.

The figures for 1978 are not yet available. However, the percentage increase in manufacturing wages (which includes industrial wages) in the Republic of South Africa for whites was 11.6 per cent. per year for 1974–77. The increase for Africans was 21.5 per cent. for 1974–77. In the Soviet Union the average wage increase for all state employees, excluding collective farm workers, for the past three year period has been 3 per cent. The figures for 1978 are not yet available, but the annual industrial wage increase for 1974–1977 was 3.6 per cent.
