HC Deb 23 March 1979 vol 964 c199W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Attorney-General what was the cost to public funds of the proceedings against Messrs. Aubrey, Berry and Campbell.

The Attorney-General

It is not possible to give a figure for the total costs of both trials. The first trial was abandoned after 10 days on the trial judge's direction in consequence of prejudicial remarks made by a journalist on a television programme. The costs of that trial were accordingly wasted. Prosecution counsel's fees for all the proceedings, including the trial which had to be abandoned, totalled approximately £50,000. The defendants Aubrey and Campbell were each ordered to pay £2,500 towards the prosecution costs, so that this sum should be set off against the above figures.

The cost to public funds was further reduced by the defendant Aubrey being ordered to pay one-third of his own costs and the defendants Campbell and Berry to contribute £2,200 and £250 respectively to theirs.
