asked the Secretary of State for Energy how much coking coal is produced by opencast mining; and what percentage of total coal reserves available for opencast mining contains good coking coal.

I am informed by the National Coal Board that, in 1977–78 1.9 million tonnes of coking coal were produced by opencast mining; and that coking coal represents some 8 per cent. of total reserves available for opencast mining.
