Mr. Craig

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he will give (a) details and the total rateable value of all agricultural hereditaments exempted from the payments of rates in each of the district council areas in Northern Ireland and (b) the same information for all other hereditaments exempted from paying rates or enjoying concessions in the respect of the payment of rates.

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland under what statutory provisions the regional rate in Northern Ireland is raised.

Mr. Pendry

The statutory provision under which the regional rate in

Northern Ireland is raised is the Rates (Northern Ireland) Order 1977, articles 6 and 7.

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland under what statutory provisions a ratepayer has the right to know how the district rate is struck in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Pendry

Article 8(4)(6) of the Rates (Northern Ireland) Order 1977 lays a duty on a district council to publish a notice of the district rate struck. The statutory provision under which the district rate is struck is contained in articles 6, 7 and 8 of the order.

Mr. Wm. Ross

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland under what statutory provisions a ratepayer has the right to know how the percentages or sums embodied in the regional rate are divided among the services provided by the regional rate.

Mr. Pendry

There is no statutory provision for making known to a ratepayer how the regional rate is struck.
