HC Deb 19 March 1979 vol 964 c496W
Mr. Blaker

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether in elaboration of the written answer, Official Report, 9 March, c. 812, he will specify the ways in which apartheid still exists in the sport of rugby football in South Africa.

Mr. Rowlands

There are no mixed rugby clubs in South Africa other than those belonging to the small non-racial South African Rugby Union, which has no relationship with the South African Rugby Board. The South African Rugby Board brings together the white provincial Rugby Unions, the South Africa Rugby Federation (coloured) and the South Africa Rugby Association (black). Rugby Board teams at club or provincial level are either white, coloured or black. White and non-white teams compete against each other in the annual Pienaar (provincial level), competition and in friendly matches between clubs. Teams chosen to play international sides are selected by a committee of the Rugby Board and can include non-white players.
