§ Mr. Corbettasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much of the £900,000 budget of the Medical Research Council toxicology unit at Carshalton was spent on toxicity research involving experiments on living animals in 1977–78.
§ Mrs. Shirley Williams, pursuant to her reply [Official Report, 6 March 1979; Vol. 963, c. 664], gave the following information:
363WAlthough it is difficult to make accurate allocations of expenditure, the toxicology unit estimates that in 1977–78 about £140,000 was spent on experiments on living animals, and about £275,000 on the study of tissues and biological materials taken from animals.
