asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the total gross expenditure in Scotland on rate fund services for each year since 1970–71, including an estimate for 1978–79; and what is the total expenditure on wages and salaries expressed as a percentage of gross expenditure on rate fund services for each year.

Information about gross expenditure on rate fund services is not yet available for the years from 1975–76. Provisional and estimated figures relating to expenditure relevant for rate support grant were provided in reply to a previous question by the hon. Member on 28 July 1978.—[Vol. 954, c. 747–748.] The following table shows expenditure on salaries and wages against total rate fund revenue expenditure for the years 1970–71 to 1974–75.
