HC Deb 07 March 1979 vol 963 cc705-6W
Mr. David Mitchell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many schedule D and schedule E taxpayers, as a proportion of the total number in each category, have been subjected to in-depth investigations by the Inland Revenue in the last year for which figures are available.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

During the year 1978 approximately 50,000 investigations into the accounts of schedule D taxpayers were completed—about 2.7 per cent. of the total.

Approximately 130,000 other tax investigations were made. Most of those concerned schedule E taxpayers—about 0.5 per cent. of the total.
