HC Deb 07 March 1979 vol 963 c704W
Mr. Crawford

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the cost to the Exchequer of giving to retirement pensioners tax relief on the first £300 unearned income.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

The cost of exempting from income tax the first £300 of investment income for retirement pensioners, including all those receiving national insurance or occupational pensions and all widowed pensioners, would be about £280 million in 1978–79.
