Reliable average earnings figures for November are not available for years prior to 1970 and accordingly for comparability the average earnings figures used are for full time male manual workers in October in each year.

In 1979–80, on the assumptions made in the Question, the increase in net income for a man paying tax at the basic rate would be 73p a week for the family with 2 children under 11 and £1.02 per week for the family with 2 children under 11 and 2 aged between 11 and 16.
