HC Deb 05 March 1979 vol 963 cc451-2W
Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what is the cost of installing lamp standards on the A6 between Milton Hill and Milton Ernest, Bedfordshire; and how far up the A6 it is planned to carry them.

Mr. Horam

There are no plans at present to install lighting on A6 between Milton Hill and Milton Ernest. A scheme to install lighting through the village of Milton Ernest, at an estimated cost of £8,200, is due to be carried out shortly.

Number
1976 1977
Fatal Injury Fatal Injury
Involving a lamp-post 304 6,409 290 6,324

All accidents 6,006 252,633 6,093 259,768

Of all fatal road accidents, some 5 per cent. involved lamp-posts, and a further 1 per cent. involved telegraph poles. Of all injury road accidents, some 2½ per cent. involved lamp-posts and a further 1 per cent. involved telegraph poles. Only these two fixed obstacles could be recorded on the accident report form in use up to 1977. Accidents involving a lamp-post cannot be subdivided by type of lamp-post. Only two years' data can be provided without incurring disproportionate cost. 1978 accident and casualty information is not yet available.

Installation of lighting on A6 north of the village is not planned at present.

Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what he estimates will be the annual cost of maintenance and electricity costs of the road lighting recently constructed between Clapham and Milton Hill on the A6.

Mr. Horam

The annual maintenance and electricity costs of the recently installed lighting on the A6 between Clapham and Milton Hill are £250 and £400 respectively.
