asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) what is the number of persons wholly unemployed at the nearest convenient date, nationally and regionally;

(2) at the nearest convenient date, how many persons were unemployed for four weeks or less, nationally and regionally;

(3) at the nearest convenient date, how many persons were unemployed for more than four weeks, nationally and regionally.

During the period 9 February to 10 May 1979, 1,017,700 persons joined the unemployment register and 1,143,900 persons left it. These figures relate to registrations at local employment offices but not to those at careers offices or professional and executive offices.
