§ Mr. Skeetasked the Secretary of State for Energy, what has been the effect of the reduction of tetra ethyl lead and tetra methyl lead on the octane rating of petrol; and how it is proposed that the efficiency of engine performance will be maintained without additional crude oil consumption.
§ Mr. GrayThe quality of petrol sold in the United Kingdom is defined in the British Standards Institution's specification 4040 which was first published in 1967. The research octane numbers in this specification have remained unchanged with the reduction of the lead alkyl content. Efficiency in engine performance has therefore not been affected.
