Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the average level of public expenditure per head at the latest available date in each of the following categories (a)social security, (b) health,(c) housing, (d)education,(e) personal social services,(f) science and arts and (g) law and order and protective services.

The figures for 1977-78, consistent with the outturns shown in table 5.3 in the public expenditure White Paper Cmnd. 7439, are as follows:

Mr. Bruce-Gardyne

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his latest estimate of public expenditure, as denned before Cmnd. 6721, as a percentage of gross domestic product at factor cost in the financial years 1957-58, 1970-71, 1973-74, 1976-77, 1977-78 and 1978-79; and what is his forecast of the corresponding percentage for the financial year 1979-80 following the Budget changes.
