HC Deb 18 June 1979 vol 968 c448W
Mr. Pawsey

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment, in view of the annoyance often caused to persons living nearby, whether he proposes to review the policy of the previous Government oi not moving on gipsies and other itineranl travellers from property owned by Government Departments, in particular land adjacent to public highways.

Mr. Monro

The policy of not evicting gipsies must be retained unless clearance of the land is essential. Local authorities have not yet provided sufficient caravar sites, so gipsies moved from unauthorised encampments can go only to other illegal sites.
