HC Deb 18 June 1979 vol 968 cc439-40W
Mr. Robert Edwards

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the total financial amount allocated to housing subsidies in the council sector for the last financial year.

Mr. Geofirey Finsberg

The total amount allocated to housing subsidies, excluding rent rebate subsidy, for local authorities (England) in the Supply Estimate for 1978.-79 was £1,005 million. £982 million was paid.

Mr. Robert Edwards

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the total number of council tenancies currently receiving any form of subsidy; and what percentage this is of the total municipal housing stock.

Mr. Geofirey Finsberg

The determination of rents is, of course, a matter for local authority decision but, as housing subsidies are credited to an authority's housing revenue account generally, all tenants may be assumed to derive some benefit. In addition, individual tenants may benefit from rent rebates.
