HC Deb 11 June 1979 vol 968 cc136-7W
Mr. Field

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will update the answer given to the hon. Member for Birmingham, Perry Barr (Mr. Rooker), [Official Report, 26 October 1977, c. 662.]

Mr. Peter Rees

The amounts of income tax, surtax, corporation tax and capital gains tax outstanding at the end of the accounting year to 31 October 1977 are shown below, together with the amounts collectable at that date and estimates of the amounts ultimately recoverable. Later figures for these taxes are not yet available.

The estimates of tax ultimately recoverable are necessarily conjectural and subject to an appreciable margin of error.

Capital transfer tax and estate duty of £7.9 million remained uncollected at 31 March 1978 on assessments raised by 31 March 1977. Finally, £31.3 million of value added tax for the calendar year 1976, and £22.2 million of value added tax for the calendar year 1977 remained uncollected at 31st December 1978.
