§ Mr. Rookerasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, in view of the statements in the latest report of the Board of Inland Revenue that the withdrawal of child tax allowances and the change in life assurance relief have each saved 1,000 staff in the Inland Revenue, he will intensify revenue activities in the area of the hidden or cash economy.
§ Mr. Peter ReesThe staffing reductions in question are reflected in the Inland Revenue manpower requirements for the current year. The Board of Inland Revenue has very much in mind the problems of tax evasion and it is always seeking to deploy the limited manpower resources available to it in the most cost-effective way.
