HC Deb 27 July 1979 vol 971 cc642-3W
Mr. Marland

asked the Minister of Transport what proposals he has for repairing and improving the Wye bridge at Chepstow.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

We are urgently looking at ways to improve the Wye crossing at Chepstow in collaboration with my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales. Consultants, Ove Arrup have been appointed to submit proposals for the long-term future of the crossing. They are also looking into the possibility of short-term measures, but meanwhile we will do everything possible to maintain the 24-ton weight limit which is being retained during the daytime with the cooperation of the police who are supervising the spacing of heavy vehicles on the bridge crossing. Our aim will be to ensure that there is an adequate crossing of the river to meet the traffic needs of the area.
