asked Her Majesty's Government:

What, for the latest year for which figures are available, was the total sum contributed by the United Kingdom to the United Nations; how many member countries were in default in their contributions; and which member country was in default for the largest amount.

Lord CARRINGTON

In 1978, the United Kingdom contributed 18,245,733 US dollars to the United Nations regular budget and a total of 144,301,936 US dollars to other funds and agencies within the United Nations system. According to United Nations document ST/ADM/SER. B/240 of 16th February 1979, a copy of which has been placed in the Library, contributions to the regular budget of the United Nations were outstanding from 66 Member States on 31st December 1978. According to the same document, the largest outstanding contribution (34,963,883 US dollars) was due from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
