HC Deb 27 July 1979 vol 971 c518W
Mr. Hordern

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list the numbers employed in his Department, and of all Government bodies sponsored by his Department, and the cost of salaries, in February 1974 and at the latest available date.

Mr. Mark Carlisle

This information is not available in the form requested. Staff in post in my Department, excluding the UGC, in April 1974 and April 1979 were 2,766 and 2,573. The money provision for staff salaries in the published estimates for 1974–75—adjusted by supplementary estimates—and in the revised cash limits for 1979–80—published on 26 June—was £11,720,500 and £20,153,600. The figures include staff concerned with arts and libraries who are now the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.

The information on sponsored bodies could not be provided without disproportionate cost.
