HC Deb 27 July 1979 vol 971 c535W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if, in view of the increase in crimes of assault on the person, and the widespread vandalism of telephone boxes, he will seek to establish a new public alarm system mounted on street lamps combining sound and visual signals to enable members of the public to call the police in an emergency.

Mr. Brittan

No. I cannot see that any system available in the streets would escape vandalism.
