Mr. Brotherton

asked the Minister for the Civil Service what are the activities of the Civil Service Retirement Fellowship; how many people it employs: and what was the cost to public funds in the latest year for which figures are available.

The rules of the Civil Service Retirement Fellowship states that its objects shall be "to relieve old age, suffering, hardship and distress among its beneficiaries". The fellowship employs a full-time staff of eight at its headquarters office, Local activities, including a visiting service, are carried out by retired civil servants on a voluntary basis. The fellowship received a grant of £66,000 from the Civil Service Department in 1978–79.
