HC Deb 27 July 1979 vol 971 cc614-5W
Mr. Ron Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Industry whether Carlisle and Cumbria will still qualify for regional grants from the EEC after 1982.

Mr. David Mitchell

At the end of the transitional period, the Cumbrian special development area is scheduled to become a development area. Carlisle and the other development areas in Cumbria are scheduled to become non-assisted areas, but they will be subject to further consideration in a special review before they are downgraded. Projects in special development and development areas will continue to be eligible for assistance from the quota section of the European regional development fund, but projects in non-assisted areas are not eligible for such assistance.
