asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has any plans to issue new guidelines concerning the powers of the police to stop and search suspected persons; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Whitelaw

The powers of the police to stop and search suspected persons come within the terms of reference of the Royal Commission on criminal procedure. I have no plans to issue new guidelines or take other action in respect of such matters in advance of the Commission's report.
