HC Deb 26 July 1979 vol 971 cc370-1W
Dr. David Clark

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what is his estimate of the total cost of the shipbuilding redundancy payments scheme 1978 for the years July 1979 to July 1980 and July 1980 to July 1981, respectively.

Mr. Michael Marshall

Total cost cannot be forecast since it depends on the number of eligible employees; on their age, length of service, previous pay, and on their success in finding alternative employment. The present pattern of payments suggests a cost of not less than £2,500 for each eligible employee.

Dr. David Clark

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what has been the average individual payment made under the shipbuilding redundancy payments order 1977.

Mr. Michael Marshall

At 26 July 1979, the average individual payments under the Shipbuilding (Redundancy Payments Scheme) (Great Britain) Order 1978 totalled £1,750. This total comprises an average lump sum of £1,428 and average periodical payments to date of £322.
