HC Deb 26 July 1979 vol 971 cc445-6W
Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will introduce legislation making accidents on escalators reportable.

Mr. Mayhew

I am informed by the chairman of the Health and Safety Commission that the proposed regulations for the notification of accidents, dangerous occurrences and ill health contain comprehensive requirements for accident notification for all work activities.

Accidents to employed and self-employed persons and to members of the public will be notifiable.

I have no plans for further legislation to make accidents on escalators specifically reportable.

Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) if he will list the initiatives taken by his Department since 1969 to improve the safety of escalators for employees and the general public; county of Tyne and Wear; what percentage of the total this represents; and how the figures break down as between the sexes.

Mr. Jim Lester

The following table gives the numbers registered as unemployed and the percentage rates of unemployment in the Tyne and Wear metropolitan county at 14 June, the latest date for which the information is available.

Mr. Jim Lester

The nearest available information derived from the new earnings survey is given below. It relates to April 1978 and to full-time men aged 21 and over whose pay for the survey reference pay period was not affected by absence. It is rounded to the nearest 10p and is subject to sampling error.

(2) if he will list the initiatives taken by his Department since 1969 to improve the safety of escalators for the general public.

Mr. Mayhew

I shall reply to the hon. Member as soon as possible.
