HC Deb 26 July 1979 vol 971 cc364-5W
Mr. Christopher Price

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list in theOfficial Report the total amount of outstanding debt incurred by those direct grant schools which have opted for comprehensive reorganisation, which was taken over or paid off by the Government or local authorities when these schools entered the maintained sector.

Dr. Boyson

Under the provisions of the Direct Grant Grammar Schools (Cessation of Grant) Regulations 1975 the Government have so far paid £1.28 million in respect of certain debts of direct grant schools entering the maintained system. Other claims are being considered as schools become maintained and the total outlay is expected to be about £2 million.

Mr. Christopher Price

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will list in theOfficial Report the total amount of financial assistance offered or given to those direct grant schools which have opted for comprehensive reorganisation to help with the costs of reorganisation.

Dr. Boyson

The total amount of grants approved for former direct grant schools which have entered the maintained system as voluntary aided schools, since the time they became maintained, is £5.34 million. This represents 85 per cent. of the approved expenditure for which the governors of aided schools are eligible for grant aid under the Education Acts. Of this amount £3.92 million has so far been paid. These figures do not include payments made under the provisions of the Direct Grant Grammar Schools (Cessation of Grant) Regulations 1975 in respect of outstanding debts referred to in my reply today to the hon. Member's question on this subject, nor do they include any amounts paid by local education authorities as part of their responsibility for maintaining voluntary aided schools.
