Mr. Fry

asked the Minister of Transport if he will list those public inquiries into motorway or trunk road schemes since 1976 which have lasted more than one day, giving in each case the number of days the inquiry lasted and the dates when the inquiry opened and closed.

The information requested is given in the table below. In the time available it has not been possible to indicate whether particular inquiries were into line orders, subsidiary orders alone, or concurrently into all the orders for a particular section.

The procedure for trunk road inquiries was reviewed in 1976–77 with the help of the Council on Tribunals. The changes announced in April 1978 have since been progressively introduced and are working reasonably well. We are, however, keeping the situation under review.
