Mr. Kenneth Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what assistance he proposes to provide for those county councils and district councils in rural areas whose rate revenue is already inadequate, and where cuts cannot easily be made because spending has not been more than absolutely necessary.
§ Mr. KingThe reduction in the 1979–80 rate support grant increase order must follow the pattern of distribution specified in the main order. I am, how ever, aware that many authorities have already achieved substantial economies and I shall bear this in mind in considering future RSG settlements.
