HC Deb 24 July 1979 vol 971 c101W
Mr. Jim Marshall

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster if he will regard the Leicestershire museum and art gallery, Leicester, to be a suitable institution to receive pre-eminent works of art accepted by Her Majesty's Treasury in lieu of capital tax liabilities in view of the progress made over the past six years by the Leicestershire county council and its predecessor, Leicester city council, in raising the standards of the gallery to high international standard of security, conservation and exhibition facilities and the recent completion of air conditioning to the refurbished art galleries and art studio.

Mr. St. John-Stevas

I have already allocated a painting by Aert van der Neer entitled "Winter Landscape at Sunset" to the Leicestershire museums and art galleries, Leicester on the recommendation of the Standing Commission on museums and galleries. This painting was accepted by Her Majesty's Treasury in lieu of estate duty and paid for from the national land fund.
