HL Deb 12 July 1979 vol 401 c1126WA
Lord AVEBURY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What stage has been reached in the negotiations between the EEC and Malta concerning importation of textiles from Malta to EEC countries, and if they will make a Statement.

Lord TREFGARNE

A further round of negotiations between the EEC Commission and the Maltese took place on 28th June and resulted in an agreement by the Maltese to restrain their exports of clothing and textiles to the Community. The levels negotiated for the United Kingdom are generally close to, and in some cases below, the level of 1978 trade. The Maltese have undertaken to lift the embargo which they had placed on the import of United Kingdom textiles and clothing.

House adjourned at ten minutes before nine o'clock.
