HC Deb 02 July 1979 vol 969 c426W
33. Miss Fookes

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will seek to amend the Trade Descriptions Act 1968, particularly in relation to the control of false mileometers.

Mrs. Sally Oppenheim

Falsifying a mileometer reading is already an offence under the Trade Descriptions Act 1968. But I am aware that consumers and enforcement authorities can face problems in verifying the accuracy of car mileages. I shall be considering how these problems can best be dealt with when the Director General of Fair Trading has completed his present review of the second-hand motor trade.
