HC Deb 02 July 1979 vol 969 cc439-40W
Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many day care places for the mentally ill are currently available in Wales, of these how many are provided by voluntary organisations and how many by local authorities, and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

There are 307 day care places for the mentally ill currently available in Wales all of which are provided by local authorities. During the last four years there has been a fall in the number of centres catering specifically for the mentally ill, but an increase in the number of places for the mentally ill in mixed day centres has ensured that provision has remained fairly constant.

Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many patients were in mental hospitals in Wales in each year since 1970, and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

The estimated number of inpatients in hospital accommodation for the mentally ill and mentally handicapped at 31 December were as follows:

percentage of the total number of those registered as unemployed.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards
