HC Deb 02 July 1979 vol 969 c429W
Mr. Trippier

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will supply details of the number of imported shoes which are subject to consumer complaint.

Mrs. Sally Oppenheim

I understand that of the 1,759 complaints received by the footwear testing centre during the 12 months ending 31 July 1978, 51 per cent. related to imported footwear. The Office of Fair Trading collects figures for complaints about footwear received by local authorities but complaints about imported footwear are not identified separately.

Mr. Trippier

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will support a multi-footwear arrangement similar to that in the textile industry; and if he will arrange for negotiations to be set up in the European Economic Community for this purpose.

Mr. Parkinson

I shall reply to my hon. Friend as soon as possible.
