§ Lord AVEBURYasked Her Majesty's Government:
Whether they will define the meaning of the term "high gonad dose" used in Section 3.3.8 of the Code of Practice for the Protection of Persons against Ionizing Radiations; what is the gonad dose of a person given an X-ray of the thigh and hip respectively for entry certificate purposes by Dr. Mohamed Latif of Dacca; and whether all these persons have been given adequate gonad shields as required by this section of the code of practice.
§ Lord GORONWY-ROBERTSThere is no quantitative definition of the term "high gonad dose" as used in Section 3.3.8 of the code of practice. The International Commission on Radiological 2077WA Protection classifies radiological examinations of the hip and upper thigh in the "high gonad dose group" with gonad doses of 1,200 millirads for males and 500 millirads for females. These gonad dose values are composite figures derived from many measurements in many countries and are to be taken only as an indication of the magnitude of the dose in the group. In Dacca gonads are protected by lead shielding during radiology of the pelvis and near areas, but the precise gonad dose in indiviual cases is not known.
