§ Mr. Peter Walkerasked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) how many local authority dwelling units there are in the United Kingdom situated in high-density developments;
(2) how many local authority dwelling units there are situated in buildings of five storeys or more in the United Kingdom.
§ Mr. FreesonThere is no generally accepted definition of a high density development. However, it may help the right hon. Member to know that new buildings of five or more storeys tend to have densities of more than 400 bed spaces per hectare. Whilst precise figures are not available, it is estimated, from various sources, that out of 6J million local authority dwellings in the United Kingdom there are about 500,000 dwellings situated in buildings of five or more storeys.
