HC Deb 05 February 1979 vol 962 cc13-4W
Mr. Lawson

asked the Secretary of State for Trade if he will publish a table showing, for each quarter of 1978, seasonally adjusted, and for the years 1975 and 1970, imports as a percentage of total United Kingdom sales for each of the following classifications: (a) all finished manufactures, (b) all industrial materials, (c) food, beverages and tobacco, (d) textile fibres, (e) chemicals and pharmaceutical products, (f) iron and steel, (g) motor vehicles, (h) industrial, office and metalworking machinery and equipment, (i) electrical and telecommunications equipment, (j) furniture, (k) clothing and (l) footwear.

Mr. Meacher

Estimates of import penetration for the years 1970 to 1977 inclusive for a wide range of groups of industrial goods and materials were published in "Trade and Industry" on 3 November 1978. Information is not available for the year 1978 nor quarterly on a seasonally adjusted basis. Import penetration ratios for a limited number of industries in the form of four-quarter moving averages up to end-March 1978 appear in the March 1978 issue of Business Monitor M12 "Import Penetration and Export Sales Ratios for Manufacturing Industry".
