Mr. Onslowasked the Secretary of State for Employment what representations he has received about the inadequate staffing level at the British Approval Service for electrical equipment in flammable atmospheres, and the effect that this is having on export sales by United Kingdom companies; and what action he is taking to deal with this situation.
§ Mr. John GrantI have received a joint representation concerning delays in the processing of applications by the British Approvals Service for electrical equipment in flammable atmospheres from the chairmen of the sector working parties on automation and instrumentation and on industrial electrical equipment. In addition to this, I have received representations on this subject from three hon. Members, including the hon. Member for Woking (Mr. Onslow). Representations have also been made to the chairman of the Health and Safety Commission, including a report by the chairman of the Commission's BASEEFA advisory council, which represents the main interests concerned. This is a seri-22W ous matter and I understand from the chairman that it is under urgent and thorough review. I shall inform the hon. Member as soon as the current inquiries are complete.
