HL Deb 01 February 1979 vol 398 c442WA
Lord HOUGHTON of SOWERBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will ask institutions which make public appeals for funds to fight cancer to include in their advertisements an appeal also for co-operation in the prevention of cancer of the lung by giving up smoking.

Lord WELLS-PESTELL

There is a widely known and clear association between smoking, especially of cigarettes, and many distressing illnesses, including lung cancer. Her Majesty's Government would encourage any institution which is concerned with the fight against an illness associated with smoking to appeal in its advertisements for people to give up the habit.
