Mr. Weetch

asked the Attorney-General (1) if he will list the officers of the National Legal Aid Committee administered by the Law Society together with a statement of their yearly salaries for the current financial year;

(2) if he will list the 14 area secretaries of the legal aid scheme and the 20 local secretaries, together with their salaries, for the current financial year.

The Attorney-General

The officers of the Legal Aid Committee comprise a chairman, a vice-chairman and a secretary. The chairman and vice-chairman are unpaid and receive only travelling and subsistence expenses. The secretary receives no separate payment in respect of attendance at the Legal Aid Committee which forms one part of his duties in the employment of the Law Society for which he receives a salary of £16,714. The names of the area secretaries and local secretaries are published in The Solicitors' Diary. Their salaries, with effect from 1 August 1979, fall within the following scales: area secretaries, £10,646-£14,027; senior local secretaries, £8,034-£11,612 and local secretaries, £7,508-£11,087.
