HC Deb 11 December 1979 vol 975 cc548-9W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people had been unemployed for (a) between one and two years and (b) over two years, in October of each year since 1950.

Mr. Jim Lester

At 11 October 1979 the quarterly analysis indicated that 337,000 unemployed people in Great Britain had been registered for more than 52 weeks. Of these, 165,200 had been registered for between 52 weeks and 104 weeks and 171,800 for more than 104 weeks. Corresponding information is not available for earlier years because until 1979 there was no further analysis of those registered for more than 52 weeks.

The following table gives the numbers registered as unemployed for more than 52 weeks in September of each year from 1950 to 1961, and in October of each year from 1962 to 1978.
