HC Deb 04 April 1979 vol 965 cc792-3W
Mr. Younger

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if the figures are yet available for the total number of unfair dismissal cases recorded in 1978; and, if so, if he will list (a) the number of cases settled through conciliation, (b) the number of conciliated cases where payments were made, (c) the number of claims dealt with by industrial tribunals and (d) the number of claims upheld at a tribunal hearing.

Mr. Harold Walker

In 1978, 37,387 complaints of unfair dismissal were registered by the central office of the industrial tribunals. I am informed by the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service that in 1978 13,430 cases were settled by conciliation but that it does not have information on the number of conciliated cases where payments were made. As regards the number of cases heard at tribunals my Department's provisional figures indicate that in 1978 11,983 unfair dismissal cases were heard by industrial tribunals, of which 3,461 were upheld.
