HC Deb 04 April 1979 vol 965 cc850-1W
Mr. Michael Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection if he will give the rate of increase in consumer prices in the latest three-month period for which comparable information is available, expressed at an annual rate, in the following countries: the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, Japan, West Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg and Ireland.

Mr. Hattersley

The figures, for what they are worth, are given below. Expressing at an annual rate, for each country, the change over a three-month period is not a reliable basis upon which to compare trends.

Consumer Prices—All Items
October 1978—January 1979 (per cent. changes annual rate)
United Kingdom 12.7
United States 7.9
Canada 7.6
Japan -4.6
West Germany 7.4
France 8.0
Italy 10.21
Netherlands —1.3
Belgium 5.6
Denmark 2.7
Luxembourg 4.7
Ireland 5.92

2 Aug. 1978—Nov. 1978.
