asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what proportion of pupils entered for Scottish Certificate of Education O grade examinations achieved passes in English, French, mathematics, arithmetic, chemistry, physics, biology. history, modern studies, geography, Latin and statistics in each year since 1950;

(2) what proportion of pupils entered for Scottish Certificate of Education higher examinations achieved passes in English, French, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, history, modem studies, geography, Latin, and German in each year since 1950.

Mr. McElhone

The Scottish Certificate of Education, offered at both higher and ordinary grades, was introduced in 1962. The Scottish Education Department's annual reports give the information requested for the years 1962–64 inclusive, and the annual reports of the Scottish Certificate of Education Examination Board from 1965 onwards.

Mrs. Bain

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what proportion of pupils entered for certificate of sixth year studies examinations achieved passes in chemistry and physics in each year since 1970.

Mr. McElhone

There is no pass award in the certificate of sixth year studies: awards are graded A-E. Figures of presentations and awards since 1970 are to be found in the published annual reports of the Scottish Certificate of Education Examination Board.
